Text-to-video vs character swap: which one do you need?
6 min read
Use a text-to-video model such as Kling, Seedance, Veo or Gemini Omni when you want a scene that does not exist yet and can describe it in words. Use a character swap, which is what Duble AI does, when the video already exists, such as a trend or a clip of your own, and you want another character in it with the same movement and the same sound.
This page describes the field as of October 2026. Duble AI is our product. Each statement about another product comes from its maker's page, linked where it is made, and nobody ran a side-by-side test of the tools.
Can ChatGPT or Sora make this video?
Sora is no longer an option. OpenAI's help center says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026, and its deprecations page lists the Sora 2 models and the Videos API for removal on 24 September 2026, with no replacement named. We could not confirm a video generator inside ChatGPT as of October 2026, so check its current features before relying on one.
Whatever tool you ask, a written prompt describes a new scene. It does not return a video that already exists with someone else in it.
What is the difference between text-to-video, image-to-video and a character swap?
They are three jobs that differ in what you start from. Text-to-video starts from words, image-to-video starts from a still picture, and a character swap starts from a finished video.
| Text-to-video | Image-to-video | Character swap | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You give | A written description, sometimes with reference images | A still image, usually with a short description | A video that exists and the character who should appear in it |
| You get | A new scene | The image set in motion | The same video with the character in place of the person |
| Who sets the movement | The model, following your words | The model, following your words | The original video |
| Examples | Kling 4.0, Seedance 2.5, Gemini Omni | The same models take images as input | Duble AI, Real Xablau, Higgsfield Recast |
The comparison of AI character swap video tools has limits and prices for the third column. Motion control AI explained covers the term people use for the swap and for making a picture follow a movement.
Can Kling, Seedance or Gemini also edit a video I already have?
Their makers say the newest versions can. The line between the jobs is blurring, so it helps to see exactly what each page claims.
- Kling 4.0. Kling's own guide, dated 30 September 2026, says you can add, replace, remove or restyle elements in existing footage, with up to five input videos. It says you can swap in your own characters while keeping the original pacing and camera work. Kuaishou's release puts the launch on 15 October 2026.
- Seedance 2.5. ByteDance Seed's announcement of 31 July 2026 says it edits by timestamp and can change characters, actions or plot in specific clips. One request takes up to 10 video clips as references. See Seedance 2.5.
- Google. Gemini Omni creates video from text, images, audio and video, and edits videos through conversation. In the Gemini API, Omni Flash takes input video up to 10 seconds for editing. Google's developer docs say the Veo 3.1 preview models shut down on 22 October 2026 and point to Gemini Omni Flash.
What differs is the work you do. These tools ask you to write instructions and supply references for each clip, and their pages describe generating audio with the picture. What an edit does with your original soundtrack is not stated on the pages we read. A character swap app covers the narrower job: you pick the video and the character, and write nothing.
When is text-to-video the right choice?
When there is no video to start from. A product shot, a landscape, a short story, background footage or an ad scene you have only in your head are all cases where you describe the result and the model invents it. Duble AI cannot do any of these, because it never makes a video from a description.
When is a character swap the right choice?
When the video you want already exists and only the person in it should change. Three common cases:
- A trend, where the movement, the framing and the song are what made it spread.
- A clip you filmed yourself, with your character taking your place.
- A recurring character that has to look the same in many videos.
In Duble AI you pick a trend from the library or send an MP4 or MOV of 3 to 30 seconds. The character, which the app calls a double, comes from a description, from your photos or from the cast. The scene comes from the video, and so does the sound: the app creates no music and no voice. The app shows the cost before it generates, and credits come back if a video fails.
Ten seconds cost 30 credits, which comes to $4.44 a video on the larger monthly plan. The result resembles the source without promising a frame-for-frame copy, and an influencer made from your photos resembles you without being a perfect copy. The steps are in how to make AI trend videos and how to replace a person in a video of your own.
Which one should I use? A decision table
| I want | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A scene that does not exist yet, from a description | Text-to-video | Nothing exists to start from |
| A still photo that moves | Image-to-video | The photo is the starting point |
| A trend, with my character in it and the original song | Character swap | The trend is the source video |
| My own video, with another character in my place | Character swap | Your movement and scene stay |
| The same character in many videos | Character swap with a saved character | The character is made once and reused. Text-to-video tools accept reference images, but you set them up for each clip |
| A person reading a script to the camera | A talking avatar | See talking avatar vs character |
| Only a face changed, with the body and clothes of the original | Face swap | See face swap vs character swap |
| New dialogue or music generated with the picture | A text-to-video model that generates audio | Duble AI never generates sound |
Can I use both?
In principle, yes. A clip from a text-to-video tool is a video file. If that tool's terms let you use it, you can send it to Duble AI as your own video. The Terms ask you to send only videos you have the right to use, and we have not checked how any particular generated clip comes out.
What about permission and AI labels?
A swap needs a face or character that is yours, invented, or from someone who agreed. Never a celebrity. Label the result as AI-made when the platform asks, as covered in AI labels on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
To try a character swap with a trend, create your character.
Frequently asked questions
- Can ChatGPT or Sora make a video from a text description?
- Sora no longer does. OpenAI says the Sora app and web were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and lists the Sora 2 models and the Videos API for removal on 24 September 2026. We could not confirm a video generator inside ChatGPT as of October 2026, so check its current features.
- What is the difference between text-to-video and a character swap?
- Text-to-video invents a new scene from a written description. A character swap starts from a video that already exists, such as a trend or your own clip, and puts a different character in place of the person, with the original movement. Duble AI does the second and never the first.
- Can Kling, Seedance or Veo replace a character in my video?
- Their makers say the newest versions can edit existing footage: Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.5 describe replacing characters, and Google's Gemini Omni edits uploaded video. Google's docs say the Veo 3.1 preview models shut down on 22 October 2026. You write the instructions and supply the references yourself.
- Does Duble AI make a video from text?
- No. Every Duble AI video puts your character into a video that already exists, either a trend from the library or a clip of 3 to 30 seconds that you send. The scene comes from that video. No text prompt can invent a scene.
- Does a character swap keep the original sound?
- In Duble AI the sound is the original video's, and the app creates no music or voice. Other tools differ, and many pages do not say, so check the one you use. Seedance 2.5 and Kling 4.0 describe generating new audio together with the picture.
- Which should I use for a TikTok trend?
- A character swap. A trend is a video that already exists, with its own movement, framing and song, and the swap keeps them while changing who appears. A text-to-video model makes a new scene from your words instead of that trend. Duble AI keeps a library of trends.
